The bird 'Hamsa' (Swan) which lives on water without getting its feathers wetted by water, has special connotations in the monistic philosophy of Advaita Vedanta and is identified with the Supreme spirit or Brahman as the Hamsa represents perfect union, balance and life. The title Parama hamsa is given to the highest ascetics, as in Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. The word "Hamsa" is also found to be as symbol of protection or hand of god in muslim. In Israel, "hamsa" stands for luck and in Tenafly, Hamsa was lucky. Role of Hams (Swan) in the story of Nalan and Damayanthi is depicted in Mahabharatha in chapters 52 to 79 in Vanaparvam. Nalacharitham is the romantic story of unlimited love between Nala and Damayanthi. I could watch Kathakali videos in the internet on this story where the heroine of the play, Damayanthi conversing with the hamsam (swan) who has brought a message from Nalan could also be seen.
Anandi is a feminine form of Anand, means merrisome, full of smiles, rejoiced,

There are some ragas are prefixed with Hamsa in Carnatic music. They are : hamsa AbhEri, hamsabhramari, hamsadIpika, hamsadwani, hamsakalyani, hamsanadaham, hamsanarayani, hamsagamini (hamsagamani), hamsanandi, hamsanantini, hamsagiri, hamsalata, hamsapancama, hamsarupini, hamsavAhini, hamsavinOdhini. Ragas with same name is also found in Hindusthani music also. For my today's blog why I have taken Hamsanandi is just because I happened to listen the film song "vEdam aNuvaNuvuNa " in Telugu sung by SPB from the Sagara Sangam in FM Rainbow at Hyderabad. The beauty is that the raga’s exquisiteness is employed by the Music maestro Ilayaraja in the movie music and the lyrics is also good. The song and movie is available in other languages also. In Tamil salangai oli vedam Vedham Anuvilum Oru Naatham

A very pleasant raga evoking bhakti rasa or joy of a swan. Hamsanandi is
very suitable for light music, bhajans and cinema songs. Compositions for
dance also sound very attractive in this raga. Hamsanandi is one of the most
attractive ragas of Muthia bhagavathar school.

Hamsanandi has a close proximity to another beautiful raga Sunadavinodini.
The only difference between the two is the absence of Rishabha in Sunadavinodini.
