Beauty of Swan and Raga Hamsanandhi

Joy in looking and comprehending is nature's most beautiful gift.
Albert Einstein

The bird 'Hamsa' (Swan) which   lives on water without getting its feathers  wetted by water,  has special connotations in the monistic philosophy of Advaita Vedanta and is identified with the Supreme spirit or Brahman  as the Hamsa represents perfect union, balance and life. The title Parama hamsa is given to the highest ascetics, as in Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. The word "Hamsa" is also found to be as symbol of protection or hand of god in muslim. In Israel, "hamsa" stands for luck and in Tenafly, Hamsa was lucky. Role of Hams (Swan) in the story of Nalan and Damayanthi is depicted in Mahabharatha in chapters 52 to 79 in Vanaparvam.  Nalacharitham is the romantic story of unlimited love between Nala and Damayanthi.  I could watch  Kathakali videos in the internet on this story where  the heroine of the play, Damayanthi conversing with the hamsam (swan) who has brought a message from Nalan could also be seen.
Anandi is a feminine form of Anand, means merrisome, full of smiles, rejoiced,
sensual pleasure  and joy  - giver of joy  or joyful.
The Nandi is a white bull on which Lord Shivasankar rides.

There are some ragas are prefixed with Hamsa in Carnatic music. They are : hamsa AbhErihamsabhramari, hamsadIpika, hamsadwani, hamsakalyani, hamsanadaham, hamsanarayani, hamsagamini (hamsagamani), hamsanandi, hamsanantini, hamsagiri, hamsalata, hamsapancama, hamsarupini, hamsavAhini, hamsavinOdhini. Ragas with same name is also found in Hindusthani music also. For my today's blog why I have taken Hamsanandi is just because I happened to listen the film song "vEdam aNuvaNuvuNa " in Telugu sung by SPB from the Sagara Sangam in FM Rainbow at Hyderabad. The beauty is that the raga’s exquisiteness is employed by the Music  maestro Ilayaraja in the movie music and the lyrics is also good.  The song and movie is available in other languages also. In Tamil salangai oli vedam Vedham Anuvilum Oru Naatham

Hamsanandi is a  panchamavarjiya raga and  janya of the 53rd melakarta
Gamanasrama, raga resembling raga Sohoni of Hindustani music, which is a
            janya of Marwa tthat.  Aro: S R1G3 M2 D2 N3 S  Ava:  N3 D2 M2 G3 R1 S.
A very pleasant raga evoking bhakti rasa or joy of a swan.  Hamsanandi is
very suitable for light music, bhajans and cinema songs.  Compositions for
dance also sound very attractive in this raga.    Hamsanandi is one of the most
attractive ragas of  Muthia bhagavathar school.
Kritis in this raga
Pahi jagatjanani of Swati Tirunal in Aadi tala
Needu Mahima of Muthiah Bhagavatar
Purandara Dasa’s “kunidaado Rang
Lalitha Dasar’s “Pavanaguru pavana” - This is very popular among Kerala audiences and music lovers because KJ Yesudas sang along with his Guru Chembai Vaidyanadha Bhagavathar and the live concert audio and videos are available with the title "Gurusmarana".

a composition of Papanasam Sivan   Srinivasa Thiruvenkata which I heard this song first when this kriti was taught to my sister which was about 27 years ago. Another kriti of Swati Tirunal  in this raga I heard through cassette sung by Neyyattinkara Vasudevan is Sankara Srigiri  natha prabho .

Hamsanandi has a close proximity to another beautiful raga Sunadavinodini.
The only difference between the two is the absence of Rishabha in Sunadavinodini.
GN Balasubramanian (known as GNB) composed a thillaana  dhImta dhImtanana
dhiraNA dhiraNA  in this raga .

Sohini, a Hindustani raga similar to Hamsanandi,  is a night raga.
This raga when it is sung  in madhya-laya and drut tempose, it allures
listeners into its swift and  sweeping phrases, often conveying emotions
of sringaar, longing, and sensuousness.         .
Sohini is featured in the old film "Sangeet Samrat Tansen" song
Jhumati Chali Haya  sung by Mukesh.
In "Mughal-e-Azam" film sunge  by Bade Ghulam Ali Khan - Thrumi

In Suvarna Sundari " Kuhu kuhu Bole Koyaliya" - Lata Mangeshkar and Rafi.
Song "Jeevan Jyot Jale" - Asha bhosle - film "Grahasthi".

We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.
Things won are done, joy's soul lies in the doing.
William Shakespeare

Joy is a net of love by which you can catch souls.
